LAPEER COUNTY, Mich. -- Lapeer County Sheriff's Deputies responded to a crash on Millington Road in Mayville at 5:17 Thursday morning.

According to the Lapeer County Sheriff’s Office, there were reports of entrapment and a vehicle “sparking.”

Deputies confirmed entrapment upon arrival, but there was no fire.

Reports say a light gray; 2007 Pontiac Grand Prix was traveling eastbound on Millington Road behind another vehicle.

The Grand Prix, driven by a 23-year-old from Millington crossed over into the westbound lanes to pass the vehicle it was behind; this was all done in a no passing zone near the crest of a hill.

The Grand Prix hit a dark colored, 2004 Ford Focus that was in the westbound lanes, head-on.

Upon impact, the Ford Focus went off the road into a residential yard, while the Grand Prix stayed in the westbound lane of Millington Road.

The Ford Focus was driven by 32-year-old Kevin Newbegin from Clifford, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 23-year-old from Millington was taken to McLaren in Lapeer and is listed in serious condition.

A preliminary investigation shows that alcohol nor drugs, or weather and environment were factors in the crash.

Reconstructionists from Lapeer County continue to work the scene and will perform tests to see if speeds in excess of 55 mph were a cause.

The crash closed the road for three hours Thursday morning.
