DETROIT, Mich - Governor-elect Gretchen Whitmer said today during a news conference she will consider using her executive power to grant clemency to people who are in jail and or prison to marijuana offenders.

“I think that the people of Michigan have said that for conduct that would now be considered legal, no one should bear a lifelong record for that conduct, so yes I’ll start taking a look at that and making some decisions and taking some action early next year", said Whitmer.

A spokesperson for Whitmer later clarified her statements

"It's a little unclear in Michigan law what the governors authority is to expunge convictions to marijuana, " said Whitmer spokesperson.

Whitmer's spokesperson also said the governor-elect's preference would be to pursue expungement legislatively.

Voters said yes to recreational marijuana on Tuesday.

Whitmer says she will work with the attorney general to set up laws and guidelines regarding recreational marijuana.

Whitmer also talked about drinking water and roads during a morning news conference.
