Detroit man arraigned after attempting to cash fraudulent payroll checks in Lapeer

LAPEER COUNTY, Mich. --Two men attempted to cash fraudulent payroll checks at a bank in Lapeer County, according to a news release.

The incident took place on June 13 just before 12:30 p.m. at Lakestone Bank and Trust in Attica Township.

Police say the checks displayed the name of a local business, and he bank teller became suspicious due to the abnormal amount of the payroll check.

The teller then called the business, and they confirmed the checks were in fact fraudulent.

In the meantime, a 58-year-old Davison man prevented one of the suspects from getting away.

Another suspect left the scene in a maroon Dodge minivan.

The man who was prevented from leaving the scene was identified as 65-year-old Stanley Welch.

He was formally charged and arraigned on uttering and publishing.

He’s being held in the Lapeer County Jail on a $50,000 bond.

The second suspect was also identified as a 54-year-old man from Detroit; criminal charges are currently being sought for this individual.

The case is still under investigation.
