Bridge Authority hears details, public opinion of proposed Line 5 tunnel during meeting

The Mackinac Bridge Authority is discussing the proposed tunnel for Enbridge's Line 5 under the Straits of Mackinac during their regularly scheduled meeting in St. Ignace.

MACKINAC COUNTY, Mich., (WPBN/WGTU) -- The Mackinac Bridge Authority is seeing a bigger crowd than normal at their regularly scheduled meeting Thursday.

During the meeting, the MBA discussed the 2018 Annual Bridge Walk, the painting of the towers and the proposed tunnel for Enbridge's Line 5 under the Straits of Mackinac.

In an agreement between Enbridge and the State of Michigan from October 2018, it is proposed that the authority would own and operate the tunnel upon completion.

The Department of Natural Resources is in attendance at the meeting to discuss more details about the tunnel.

Several non-profit organizations from across the state are also in attendance.

Enbridge sent a statement Thursday about the meeting, saying:

"Enbridge recognizes today’s meeting is the first step to establishing a strong partnership with the Mackinac Bridge Authority. Enbridge believes working with the Authority is a constructive and logical way to pursue a replacement segment of Line 5 in a tunnel under the Straits of Mackinac. The time is right to build for the future. This partnership would make a safe pipeline even safer and reflects Enbridge’s steadfast commitment to protecting the Great Lakes while safely meeting Michigan’s energy needs. New infrastructure that connects the peninsulas will continue to put Michigan at the forefront of Great Lakes stewardship and will enhance the region’s economic prosperity through energy security."
