Free heart check could save a child's life

Every year, around 2,000 people, under the age of 25, die from sudden cardiac arrest- or SCA.

Mary Smith, is a Flushing mother who wants to make sure your child is not one of them.

In January 2011, Mary's 17 year old son, Thomas, collapsed in her family's home. Tommy, a star high school athlete, suffered SCA, brought on by hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. That's a congenital defect. Tommy was born with it, but never showed any symptoms.

Mary started the Thomas Smith Foundation to provide free heart checks for teens, through a partnership with Hurley.

The next free screening is from 9 am until 2 pm, Saturday, March 24, 2018. It's at the Genesee Area Skill Center in Flint.
