Ahmad's Science Club: Pop Bottle Rocket

Vinegar and baking soda, it's a reaction many of us have seen.

But those fizzing bubbles can help you have some fun!

Here is what you will need to build your own pop bottle rocket:

  • Pop bottle (washed out) any size will do
  • Tape
  • 3 pencils or pens
  • Vinegar
  • Baking soda
  • Cork plug from any hardware store that fits the bottle opening
  • Napkin or paper towel
  • Safety glasses

Now here is how this all works.

First, tape the pencils in equal distances around the bottle to create a stand for the bottle with the nozzle facing toward the ground.

Next, fill the bottle with some vinegar. Experiment! The more vinegar and baking soda you put in the bottle, the more pressure you will build but the shorter time you will have to move back.

Third, place a line of baking soda (again, experiment with the amount) in the napkin and roll it hot dog style so you can place the entire napkin in the bottle.

Placing baking soda DIRECTLY in to the bottle will cause the reaction too quickly! You want it to be delayed, and that is what folding it in a napkin does.

Lastly, place the cork plug in the bottle and flip the bottle upside down so the nozzle is facing the ground. Your rocket will launch when the pressure builds enough!

WEAR SAFETY GLASSES and DO NOT hold your face over the bottle when you put the cork in. The bottle is pressurized and can fly upwards with force.
