FLINT, Mich. -- Once again, we're teaming up with Catholic Charities of Genesee and Shiawasse Counties for our 25 Days of Giving.
Between now and Christmas, you can donate non-perishable food, clothing and personal care items at any Dort Federal Credit Union branch.
"The reality is Flint has had, for a number of reasons, a long struggle over the last 30 or 40 years," said Kellie Pardi with Catholic Charities.
Pardi helps oversee many of the non-profit's resources -- including the adoption and foster care center, counseling services, meal programs, water distribution, and community closet.
Even a small donation can go a long way, helping to lighten the financial load.
One area of the center keeps particularly busy with volunteers handing out personal care items.
"We go through and whatever they put on their note is what they get," said volunteer Mary Kronner.
For most, the requests are as inexpensive as a roll of toilet paper or bottle of shampoo.
Kronner adds, "We have to break down the items because we can't afford to give a whole bottle."
On average, 90 to 100 people sleep at the Center for Hope between December and April each night, according to Pardi.
"I think people often think that because we're Catholic Charities, you have to be Catholic to either be part of what we do or be a recipient. We do what we do because we're Catholic, not because we expect everyone else to be," Pardi says.
