Freeland falls M.L.S. and Flushing advance to to State Finals
With the state finals just one game away both Freeland and Flushing turned their sights to their respective semifinal match-ups on Friday at the Breslin Center.
Flushing locked horns with Warren Cousino and they came out firing as Lauren Newman, Breanna Perry, and Shelby Morrow led the way to a 13 point halftime lead. The Raiders never let up, beat the Patriots 52-36. They will face East Kentwood in the finals on Saturday. Head Coach Larry Ford says his team just needs to stay the course.
"Stay on point, don't make the game bigger than it is." he said. "Obviously there's a lot riding on it but we don't want them thinking about what's riding on it we want them thinking about playing to win and they've been able to do that and if we do that tomorrow we'll be competitive."
Freeland came into Friday's match-up with Ypsilanti Arbor Prep undefeated, but so did Ypsilanti Arbor Prep, so something had to give. Jessica Piper was unconcious in the first half pacing the team in points but the Falcons trailed 30-26 at the break. A slow start to the second half eventually doomed Freeland as they scored just 8 points in the third quarter. They fall 54-46.
Players and coaches know they had a special group this season. "We didn't want the season to end, we'd come in on weekends sometimes." said Piper. "I'll definitely remember team dinners, we we're a close team and just having that closeness where we're all family I think that helps."
Head Coach Tom Zolinski says he'll miss this team. "We played 27 games and I could go another 20 with this group and I would enjoy every minute of it. We had our moments but we always came back, i'm definitely going to miss this group."
