Sheriff: Man found dead in woods after trying to exterminate insects by fire
CLARE COUNTY, Mich. (WPBN/WGTU) -- A 77-year-old man was found dead after a fire in a wooded area in Franklin Township.
It happened Thursday around 4:35 p.m. in a wooded area near Cornwell and Long Lake.
According to the Clare County Sheriff's Office, central dispatch received a call about a fire that was out of control. The caller said that they could see their neighbor lying on the ground in the fire, but was unable to get close enough to the person to check for any injuries.
Deputies and fire crews found the 77-year-old man and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators were advised that the man who was found dead had been in the wooded area possibly exterminating insects by means of fire.
Harrison Fire Department along with the DNR Fire Division worked quickly to contain the fire and extinguish it.
The fire was reported to consume about .6 acres prior to being extinguished.
The exact cause of death is unknown at this time and the incident remains under investigation.
The sheriff says the man who was killed is 77-year-old Ethan Carl of Harrison.
