MANISTEE COUNTY, Mich., (WPBN/WGTU) -- Family and friends are in shock and heartbroken after a Manistee County couple was found dead after an alleged murder suicide.

Deputies found David and Lisa Somers shot to death outside their SUV Saturday night on I-96 in Ionia County.

Lisa’s 18-year-old daughter, Amedy Dewey, was found inside the SUV on the interstate. The teen was shot and injured, but still alive.

According to deputies a shotgun was found underneath David’s body.

On Monday, friends and family say they are still in shock.

“Honestly, Dave and Lisa got along pretty well they did a lot together,” said Alysha Heck, a friend who played softball with the couple. “They did a lot for the community, a lot for the softball community, it was just shocking to hear about it.”

David and Lisa, both 51, were involved in softball leagues in the Kaleva community.

“[Dave and Lisa] take care of the fields and do most of the fundraising they organize all of the tournaments there,” Heck said. The couple would invite the players from the teams over to their house during the summer after the games.

The couple has been married since 2013. Friends on social media say both were extremely liked and influential in the community.

Lisa served as a trustee in Maple Grove Township near Kaleva. She was elected to the board in November 2017.

“[Lisa] was a great member of the township board in the short time she was there,” said Township Supervisor Wayne Beldo. Beldo said Lisa was proactive in the community and pushing for new projects.

“She wanted to improve recreation and use the facilities that we have to better serve the community,” Beldo said.

Lisa was also an instructor at West Shore Community College.

Right now the concern is for 18-year-old Amedy, who is now in critical, but stable condition.

“I wish this wouldn’t have had to happen but I mean there are somethings in life that we can’t obviously control,” Heck said. “I think it’s important to show [Amedy] support and it’s important that Dave and Lisa be remembered.”

WOOD TV8 spoke with Dave’s daughter who says her father had surgery on a brain tumor only a day before the shooting.

It’s not clear whether the surgery had anything to do with the incident.

Friends say Dave picked Lisa and his step daughter up after they returned home from a trip to the Bahamas.

It was part of a trip for Amedy’s 18th birthday.

Investigators are still trying to determine what prompted the shooting.

A Go Fund Me account has been set up to help support Amedy's surgeries and Dave and Lisa's funeral costs.
