5-year-old boy struck by Jimmy John's driver, pronounced dead at the scene in Wayland

UPDATE: The family has confirmed the identity of the deceased 5-year-old as Blake Allan Huffman.

A formal statement is currently pending from the family.

Chief Steven Harper with Wayland Police Department has confirmed the age of the driver who struck Huffman is 33-years-old, which is contrary to the initial report of being 17-years-old.

A 5-year-old boy was pronounced dead at the scene after being struck by a vehicle in Wayland around 7:30 p.m. on Friday, according to Wayland Police Department.

Police were dispatched the a pedestrian versus vehicle crash in Windsor Woods Estates and discovered the boy upon their arrival. After investigation, officials were able to determine the boy had been riding his bicycle and rode out of the family's driveway, causing a female driver to strike the boy. Wayland PD have confirmed the driver of the vehicle was a delivery driver for a local Jimmy John's franchise. Although police are reporting the driver is 17-years-old, a spokesperson with Jimmy John's said the driver is in her 30s.

EMS responded, but the child was pronounced dead at the scene.

Newschannel 3 reached out to the Jimmy John's in Wayland and received the following statement from J.P. Walters, the owner of the franchise:

Yesterday’s accident is a terrible tragedy for everyone involved. Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to the family of the victim. We are fully cooperating with the police as they investigate the incident.

Wayland police are continuing their investigation of the incident.

Assisting on the scene were Wayland Fire Department, Wayland Area EMS, Allegan County Sheriff's Department and Gun Lake Tribal Police.
