The Whiting announces its 2017-2018 season schedule

FLINT – The Whiting released its schedule for the 2017-2018 season.

The performing arts center in Flint’s Cultural Center will feature Broadway stage shows, musical groups, dance troupes, comedy, magicians, and specialty acts for families and fans of live performing arts.

Here are the acts announced Thursday that are scheduled to appear at The Whiting:

Flip FabriQue Catch Me

Tuesday, September 26, 7:30 p.m.

The dance and acrobatic company was created in 2011 by graduate students of Quebec City Circus School. They performed extensively with groups such as Cirque du Soleil. In “Catch Me!”, you’ll see the stars of Flip FabriQue soar and take your breath away.


Saturday, September 30, 8:00 p.m.

iLuminate is quickly becoming a household name. They were called “the best new act in America” during its appearance on NBC’s America’s Got Talent in 2011. iLuminate is a company based on the fusion of technology and dance. Audiences will see dancers in electrified glow-in-the-dark suits performing dynamic routines and illusions on a darkened stage.

Kinky Boots

October 17-19, 8:00 p.m.

Kinky Boots is Broadway’s huge-hearted, high-heeled hit! With songs by Grammy and Tony-winning pop icon Cyndi Lauper, this joyous musical celebration is about the friendships we discover and the belief that you can change the world when you change your mind. Inspired by true events, Kinky Boots takes you from a gentlemen’s shoe factory in Northampton to the glamorous catwalks of Milan. Kinky Boots is the winner of six Tony Awards including Best Musical, Best Score and Best Choreography.

The Hot Sardines

Friday, October 20, 8:00 p.m.

Fueled by the belief that classic jazz feeds the heart and soul, the Hot Sardines are on a mission to make old sounds new again and prove that joyful music can bring people together in a disconnected world.

In the last two years, the Hot Sardines have released two albums to critical raves and a No. 1 slot on the iTunes Jazz chart in the U.S. and internationally. In the talented hands of the New York-based ensemble, music first made famous decades ago comes alive through their brassy horn arrangements, rollicking piano melodies, and vocals from a chanteuse who transports listeners to a different era with the mere lilt of her voice.


Wednesday, October 25, 7:30 p.m.

Hailed "one of the best pop-jazz vocal groups in the world" by the San Francisco Chronicle, m-pact is respected worldwide as a cutting edge trailblazer in the realm of vocal music. The Los Angeles-based ensemble has cultivated a new generation of ears hungry for the fresh, raw power of nature's "first instrument" - the human voice. Touring renowned fine arts halls and jazz festivals across four continents, m-pact has performed with pop superstars Sheryl Crow, Boyz II Men, Natasha Bedingfield, and Ray Charles to name a few; as well as with jazz legends Natalie Cole, Bobby McFerrin, and many others. Over the last two decades, their signature sound has been used in both TV themes and animated Disney feature films and is enjoyed on jazz and pop radio worldwide.

Motown the Musical

Friday, November 3 at 8:00 p.m. and Saturday, November 4 at 2:00 & 8:00 p.m.

It began as one man's story… became everyone's music… and is now Broadway's musical. Motown the Musical is the true American dream story of Motown founder Berry Gordy’s journey from featherweight boxer to the heavyweight music mogul who launched the careers of Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Smokey Robinson and many more. The Wizard of Oz

Friday, November 24, 2:00 & 7:30 p.m.

This new production of The Wizard of Oz is an adaptation of the classic MGM screenplay. The production contains the beloved songs from the Oscar-winning movie score, all of the favorite characters and iconic moments, plus a few surprises along the way.

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer – The Musical

Saturday, December 9, 2:00 & 7:00 p.m.

The beloved TV classic Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer soars off the screen and onto the stage for the holiday season. Come see all of your favorite characters from the special including Santa and Mrs. Claus, Hermey the Elf, Bumble the Abominable Snow Monster, Clarice, Yukon Cornelius and, of course, Rudolph, as they come to life in Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer: The Musical. It’s an adventure that teaches us that what makes you different can be what makes you special. Don’t miss this wonderful holiday tradition that speaks to the misfit in all of us.

Petra and The Wolf

Monday, February 12, 7:00 p.m.

Petra & the Wolf, inspired by the Prokofiev classic, introduces young audiences to the journey of the fearless Petra. Her adventures are a showcase of female bravery and leave audiences walking away with a new sense of compassion and empathy.

Second City

Friday, February 23, 8:00 p.m.

The Second City opened its doors on a snowy Chicago night in December of 1959, and has since grown to become the world’s premier comedy club, theatre and school of improvisation. Since its debut, The Second City has been a launching pad for comedians, actors, directors and others working in show business. Notable alumni include Dan Aykroyd, Jim Belushi, Steve Carell, Stephen Colbert, Tina Fey, Bill Murray, Gilda Radner, Joan Rivers, and Martin Short, among many others.

Freedom Riders

The Chieftains

Friday, March 2, 8:00 p.m.

The Chieftains are a traditional Irish band formed in Dublin in November 1962. Their sound, which is almost entirely instrumental and largely built around uilleann pipes, has become synonymous with traditional Irish music and they are regarded as having helped popularized Irish music across the world. The band have won six Grammys during their career and they were given a Lifetime Achievement Award.

Peter Pan

Saturday, March 3 at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday, March 4 at 2:00 p.m.

Led by a magical flying boy, three children zoom away from their London bedroom and into astonishing adventures in Neverland, where they encounter the lovable lost boys, cunning Captain Hook, villainous pirates, a ticking crocodile, brave Indians and the jealous fairy Tinker Bell. Songs include "I Won't Grow Up," "I'm Flyin'" and "Never Neverland.”

Momix: Opus Cactus

Friday, March 9, 8:00 p.m.

Opus Cactus is back again with a new look, fresh energy, and fun surprises! Moses Pendleton brings the landscape of the American Southwest to life with his signature illusionistic style creating dynamic images of cactuses, slithering lizards and fire dancers.

Rain: A Tribute to the Beatles

Cabaret features some of the most memorable songs in theatre history, including “Cabaret,“ “Willkommen“ and “Maybe This Time.“ Leave your troubles outside — life is beautiful at Cabaret, the Tony Award-winning musical about following your heart while the world loses its way.

One Night of Queen

Saturday, March 24, 8:00 p.m.

One Night of Queen is a touring two-hour stage show, paying tribute to the stage theatrics and music of Queen. It is performed by The Works, a band headed by Gary Mullen, who had previously won the competition show Stars in Their Eyes with his vocal and visual imitation of Queen’s legendary frontman Freddie Mercury.

Mike Super

Friday, April 13, 8:00 p.m.

The magic of Mike Super is more than just a show, it’s a community event that redefines art, theater and magic as you know it. This impressive production utilizes state of the art theatrical elements featuring an interactive stage set, video projection, cutting edge magic & illusions, dramatic lighting and energetic, digital music. It can be described as a great Broadway play, meets a rock concert, meets the hilarity of a headline comedian, emersed in original, eye popping, visual deception.

Forbidden Broadway

Thursday, April 19, 8:00 p.m.

Just when Broadway thought it was safe from the poison pen of funny-man Gerard Alessandrini, Forbidden Broadway returns, sharper and more hilarious than ever! The fall-down funny musical roast of Broadway that has picked up nine Drama Desk Awards and a special Tony Award, is back at last with a blast, features outrageous costumes, hilarious rewrites of the songs you know, and dead-on impressions by a stellar cast.

Black Violin

Saturday, May 5, 8:00 p.m.

Wil Baptiste (viola) and Kev Marcus (violin) are a string duo from Florida with equal footing in the worlds of classical music and hip-hop. Their new album Sterotypes embodies everything from classics, R&B, and Rap, all while promoting a positive social message. Black Violin, an ambitious and groundbreaking group have been playing together since high school, and with Stereotypes, they take a great leap forward, from admirable rarities to significant innovators. They are joined onstage by a drummer and turntablist.
