The lone walking bridge which connects part of the University of Michigan – Flint campus over the Flint river will soon be history.

Consumers energy is starting a project which will tear down the old bridge, replace it with a new one, and dredge the bottom of the Flint River to remove contaminated soil.

The project is expected to break ground soon. Flint City Councilwoman Monica Galloway says she’s happy to see the old bridge go.

“It’s really old and already is disrepair. The fact that it’s being done at no cost to Flint taxpayers is even better. I’m excited to see it finished,” Galloway says.

City officials are hoping the walking bridge will be replaced by the fall of 2017, or spring of 2018.
