FLINT, Mich. – Two new playgrounds are being built with volunteer help from NBC25/FOX66 team members will not be just another play area.

Thanks to a new digital interactive app, this "augmented reality" playground will let parents use their cell phones to start virtual adventures!

Biba, the company behind the app, uses individual signs posted at different points in the playground to engage kids in various games directed from their parents’ smartphones.

In a time when pulling kids away from their phones to get physical activity is increasingly difficult, Biba uses that same device to create fantasy games requiring children to explore their nearby environment.

The app is intended for kids aged 3-9, the app presents several games with different personas ranging from secret agent to archaeologist to race car driver and more.

Kids receive objectives requiring them to move from the app while parents monitor their progress and activity level.

The app also lets municipalities responsible for these augmented reality playgrounds to track when and how often their spaces are used, which attractions are most popular and what role weather plays in the activity.

While kids can still enjoy this new playground the ‘old-fashioned’ way, the augmented reality component provided by Biba lets kids feel like they’re still connected while giving parents a way to see just how much exercise their kids get.

NBC25/FOX66 is proud to be the media sponsor for this exciting playground build.
